As I come to the end of my internship at Malcolm Fernandez, I have had the chance to reflect on what has been a truly rewarding and eye-opening journey. Stepping into practice from the classroom can feel daunting, but this placement has given me the opportunity to see how legal principles are applied in real cases and how the profession operates on a day-to-day basis.
From the outset, I was given opportunities to be actively involved in the work of the firm. I assisted with legal research, drafting, and reviewing documents, and I observed how lawyers approach case preparation and strategy. These experiences gave me a practical appreciation of the precision and commitment required in legal work. I also had the privilege of observing client interactions, which highlighted the importance of professionalism, empathy, and clear communication in building trust and delivering advice.
What I valued most was the guidance I received from my LA, who patiently explained the reasoning behind tasks and always ensured I understood the broader context. This mentorship was instrumental in helping me grow in confidence and develop my skills. I am also grateful for the camaraderie of my fellow interns. Working alongside them made the experience collaborative and enjoyable, as we learned from one another and shared the challenges and achievements of the placement together.
Beyond technical skills, this internship taught me the realities of legal practice — the need for careful preparation, the ability to adapt quickly, and the balance between legal analysis and practical solutions. It has strengthened my interest in pursuing a career in law and has given me a clearer appreciation of the dedication the profession demands.
